Sarantine Mosaic

Sarantine Mosaic, set in an alternate Byzantine world, centers on Sarantium, the golden city and jewel of the empire. The series begins with Caius Crispus, or Crispin, a master mosaicist summoned to Sarantium from his homeland. Grieving the loss of his family and armed with a Queen's secret mission and a talisman, he faces mortal danger and dark magic as he journeys east.

Once in Sarantium, Crispin must navigate intrigues and violence to find his own source of power, working high on the scaffolding of his greatest creation. Lord of Emperors introduces Rustem of Kerakek, a physician from the east, adding to the city's treacherous currents. As Crispin’s fate becomes entwined with that of his royal benefactor, his loyalties are tested, especially when the emperor plots conquest and otherworldly fires flicker mysteriously in the streets.
