Elsie is self-righteous and stubborn in book one but genuinely grows — her arc is learning that good intentions can be weaponized and that trust must be earned rather than assumed. Bacchus is gentlemanly, dignified in the face of the prejudice he faces as a mixed-race man in Victorian society, and consistently treats Elsie with more respect than almost anyone else in her life.

The duology follows Elsie and Bacchus as they move from wary co-conspirators to genuine partners and then — through a forced marriage of convenience in book two — to something deeper. Meanwhile a series of wizard murders and stolen spellbooks escalates toward a mystery that implicates the Cowls themselves and puts Elsie at the center of a conspiracy far larger than her Robin Hood self-image allowed for. Themes of class inequality, institutional corruption, and the cost of naive idealism run through both volumes.
