Sandis is a vessel — one of a small number of people whose bodies can be inhabited by powerful ethereal beings called numina. Enslaved by the summoner Kazen in a smoke-choked industrial city, she is used as a weapon until a night of horror drives her to flee. Her only ally is Rone, a talented thief whose magical artifact grants him sixty seconds of invincibility daily — enough to survive pursuit, barely. Together they navigate a city of poverty and corruption while Kazen hunts them, determined to reclaim Sandis as the key to summoning the most catastrophic numen of all.

Sandis is quietly courageous — she lacks the trained combat ability of many fantasy heroines but compensates with determination, compassion, and a willingness to sacrifice herself that becomes the series'' emotional center.
