Vicki DeVine retreated to The Jumble -- a rundown resort on Lake Silence -- after a damaging divorce, hoping to rebuild quietly in a small town that lies entirely within territory controlled by the Others: vampires, shape-shifters, and entities far older and deadlier. When her lodger Aggie Crowe, a shape-shifting Crowgard, discovers a murdered man on the property, Vicki is suddenly at the center of an investigation that draws in ancient Elders who do not tolerate humans who break their rules. Set in the universe of Anne Bishop's New York Times bestselling Others series, this spin-off follows new characters navigating the resettlement and uneasy coexistence that followed the Great Predation.

Vicki DeVine is a woman learning to trust her own courage after years of erosion -- wryly funny, instinctively kind to the Others who would eat her if she made a wrong move, and possessed of a stubborn warmth that makes even ancient vampires protective of her. Deputy Jana Paniccia (book two onward) is her counterpart: a human law officer navigating a frontier town where the sheriff is a wolf who barely tolerates her species.

Across three books, the perspective expands from Vicki's intimate struggle at The Jumble to the rebuilding of Bennett -- a ghost town where humans and Others attempt to create something genuinely new -- and ultimately back to Lake Silence as darker forces attempt to destabilize the fragile peace. Each book deepens the world's meditation on coexistence, predation, and the question of whether humans can learn to live by rules they did not write. Romance, community, and found-family threads grow alongside the mystery plots.
